Here’s some of our favourites

Lewes

Just 5 minutes away, the historic town of Lewes is full of character, with its castle, medieval priory, and links to Anne of Cleves. On the edge of the South Downs National Park, it’s a great base for walks. The town is also famous for its spectacular Bonfire Night celebrations and is home to the renowned Harveys Brewery.

Brighton

Only 12 miles away, Brighton offers a lively mix of shops, restaurants, and nightlife. The Royal Pavilion, with its exotic architecture, is a highlight, while The Lanes provide a maze of alleyways filled with antiques, jewellery, and boutique shops. It’s a vibrant seaside city with something for everyone.

Beaches

For seaside trips, Brighton and Eastbourne are both within easy reach, offering classic promenades and attractions. For a quieter, more natural experience, head to Seaford’s unspoilt beach. With options for lively days out or peaceful escapes, the coast is just a short drive away.

Glyndebourne

Known worldwide as one of the great opera houses, Glyndebourne has been hosting performances since 1934. Still family-run today, it offers a summer festival that attracts audiences from far and wide. Visitors can enjoy picnics in the gardens during the long interval, making it as much a social occasion as a cultural highlight.

Alfriston

This picturesque village is a popular stop for walkers on the South Downs Way or for those arriving by car. Highlights include cream tea and the timber-framed Alfriston Clergy House, the first property purchased by the National Trust. With its thatched roof and cottage garden, it captures the charm of traditional Sussex.

Battle Abbey

The site of the Battle of Hastings in 1066, Battle Abbey is steeped in history. Visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins, walk the battlefield, and learn more about this turning point in English history. The town of Battle itself offers independent shops, cafés, and plenty of character to enjoy alongside the Abbey.

Rye Harbour

Dating back before the Norman Conquest, Rye is one of the historic Cinque Ports. Today it is a charming harbour town with cobbled streets, independent shops, and a fascinating maritime history. The nature reserve nearby is ideal for birdwatching and coastal walks.

Steam Railways

The Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park runs through Horsted Keynes to East Grinstead, with steam engines operating year-round. There is also a museum on site, while the Lavender Line at Isfield, just a few miles away, offers shorter heritage rides from March to December. Both make for a great family day out.

Walking

East Sussex is perfect for walkers, with routes across woodlands, rivers, and rolling downland. The South Downs Way is close by, along with wetlands and wildlife areas for gentler strolls. Trails vary in length and difficulty, making it easy to find the right walk, whether you want a short outing or a full day’s hike.
